{"id":230,"date":"2009-06-11T18:20:00","date_gmt":"2009-06-12T01:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.jimonline.org\/theosguy\/2009\/06\/11\/agape-vs-phileo\/"},"modified":"2013-02-20T17:40:14","modified_gmt":"2013-02-21T01:40:14","slug":"agape-vs-phileo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.jimonline.org\/theosguy\/2009\/06\/11\/agape-vs-phileo\/","title":{"rendered":"Agape vs. Phileo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With respect to the Greek words <i>agape<\/i> and <i>phileo<\/i>, which are translated <i>love<\/i> in the English, note the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Phileo doesn&#8217;t denote a lesser love except contextually<\/li>\n<li>Agape doesn&#8217;t denote divine love except contextually<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I have heard many sermons stating that the word <i>agape<\/i> means God&#8217;s divine love and  <i>phileo<\/i> is human brotherly love.   But that is not true, as stated.  It is only if the context requires it.  Here are some examples that show where it is <b>NOT<\/b> true.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> God the Father <i>phileo<\/i> the Son\u2014John 5:20.  Thus <i>phileo<\/i> can be used to denote God&#8217;s divine love.  I wouldn&#8217;t think that the Father loves the Son with a human brotherly love.<\/li>\n<li> Father <i>phileo<\/i> us and the Son\u2014John 16:27<\/li>\n<li> Jesus <i>phileo<\/i> John\u2014John 20:2.  God the Son, loved the Apostle John, and it uses the term <i>phileo<\/i>.  I am sure that God the Son loved with a divine love.<\/li>\n<li> God <i>phileo<\/i>, human <i>agape<\/i>\u2014Pro 8:17 &#8220;I (God) <i>phileo<\/i> those who (humans) love <i>agapeo<\/i> me&#8230;&#8221;<\/li>\n<li> The adulteress in Hosea 3 is committing a physical act of adultery, and it is described in the LXX as using a form of <i>agapeo<\/i>.<br \/>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Then the LORD said to me, &#8216;Go again, love [1] a woman who is loved  by a lover [1] and is committing adultery, just like the love [1] of the LORD for the children of Israel, who look to other gods and love [2] the raisin cakes of the pagans.'&#8221;&#8212;Hosea 3:1<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>[1] root=agapeo [2] root=phileo\n<\/li>\n<li> <i>Agape<\/i> as sexual\u20142 Sam 13:4; Songs 2:5-7:6<\/li>\n<li> <i>Phileo<\/i> as sexual \u2014 Prov 7:18<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Thayers lexicon makes the following disctinction between the two Greek words:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> <i>Agape<\/i> &#8211; love based in choice; admiration, esteem, veneration; commanded in Mat 5:44;<\/li>\n<li> <i>Phileo<\/i> &#8211; love based in emotion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><br class=\"spacer_\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With respect to the Greek words agape and phileo, which are translated love in the English, note the following: Phileo doesn&#8217;t denote a lesser love except contextually Agape doesn&#8217;t denote divine love except contextually I have heard many sermons stating that the word agape means God&#8217;s divine love and phileo is human brotherly love.
